The Japanese honey bee (Apis cerana japonica) is a subspecies of the eastern honey bee. They are found everywhere in Japan except for Hokkaido, Okinawa, and smaller isolated islands.

### Habitat

Japanese honey bees live not only in the mountains but also in cities like Tokyo and Osaka. 

They are a feral species and prefer to nest in hollow trees. They nest in houses and Japanese-style graves too.

It is not easy to find wild colonies, but there is at least one colony per 1 square kilometer.

### Use in apiculture

Before importing the Western honey bee, honey was solely collected from Japanese honey bees for at least 1400 years.

After introducing the Western honey bee in 1877, most commercial beekeepers switched to the Western honey bee because of its higher honey production. Currently, the majority of honey produced in Japan is from Western honey bees.

However, Western bees cannot become feral because of giant hornets and Varroa mite. As a result, the habitat of Japanese honey bees has been protected.

There has been a resurging interest among hobby beekeepers in keeping the Japanese honey bee due to media outlet coverage and a growing interest in biodiversity. 

Japanese honey bees have some traits that may make them more desirable to keep over Western honey bees, such as a more docile nature, resistance to infectious diseases and cold weather, and the ability to defend themselves against the Japanese hornet. 

### Japanese bees had been forgotten until the late 90s

There were no practical manuals about keeping Japanese honeybees until the late 90s. 

The way of keeping Japanese honeybees has been passed down from generation to generation in some mountainous areas.

Everyone in Japan had heard about "bees", but only a few knew Japan had a native bee. It was almost impossible to start keeping Japanese honey bees without knowing a beekeeper keeping Japanese honey bees.

Keeping Japanese honey bees became popular after the late 90s for the following reasons.

1. Some practical manuals were published in the late 90s
2. Beekeepers started to share how to keep Japanese honey bees on the internet
3. A popular pop idol group kept Japanese honey bees in a television program which talked about rural living

### Obtaining wild bees

Capturing a swarm is the most common way to start keeping Japanese bees.

Wild bees live not only in rural areas but also in cities. Beekeepers set bait hives and wait for the swarms. Beeswax and some other attractants are used to attract swarms.

Another way to get a colony to find a swarm of bees that have been hanging from a tree for a few hours to a few days (during swarming season). Beekeepers capture the hanging bees and put them in a beehive.

Buying Japanese bees is not common because only a few commercial beekeepers sell Japanese honey bees.

It is pretty expensive, ranging from 300 - 700 USD. Hobby beekeepers prefer to keep costs low.

### Hives

A Langstroth hive is not commonly used by hobbyisits to keep to keep Japanese honey bees. A simple and traditional beehive, the pile box hive is mainly used.

It does not contain any removable frames. The structure is simply a box with a small entrance. Like log hives, bees are allowed to build comb freely.

There are many advantages, especially for hobbyists.

- Low cost to construct the hive
- Less time and effort to manage the bees 
- Few skills and know-how are needed

ニホンミツバチはトウヨウミツバチの亜種です。北海道と沖縄、一部の離島を除いた広い範囲に生息しています。

### 生息域

ニホンミツバチは山間部だけでなく、平野部にも生息しています。ニホンミツバチは野生のミツバチで、木の洞
を好んで巣を作ります。また、民家の床下や天井裏、お墓にも巣を作ることが多いです。

野生の巣はあまり目立たないため見つけるのはそう簡単ではありませんが、１平方キロメートルに数群れの割合で存在していると考えています。

### 養蜂での利用

セイヨウミツバチが輸入されるまでは、日本ではハチミツはニホンミツバチからのみ採ることができました。

セイヨウミツバチが1877年に輸入された後、商業的な養蜂はセイヨウミツバチで行われています。これは、セイヨウミツバチの方がハチミツをたくさん集める性質があることと、近代的な巣枠式巣箱の技術と共に輸入されたためです。

しかし、セイヨウミツバチは、オオスズメバチに対抗策を持たず、ダニの被害もあり、野生化していません。結果的に、ニホンミツバチの生息域は守られています。

最近では、ニホンミツバチへの関心が高まっており、特に趣味で養蜂を始める方が多くおられます。

### 90年代まで忘れられていたニホンミツバチ

90年代後半まで、ニホンミツバチの飼育の解説書は存在しませんでした。

ニホンミツバチの飼育は、一部の山間部で、先祖代々受け継がれていました。全ての日本人が、「ミツバチ」について知っていましたが、ごくわずかな人だけが、日本に在来種のニホンミツバチが生息していることを知っていたのです。

90年代後半から、ニホンミツバチの飼育は人気が増していますが、次のような理由があります。

1. 90年代後半から、複数の飼育の解説書が出版された
2. 90年代後半から、愛好家がインターネット上で飼育方法を紹介し始めた
3. 人気アイドルグループが田舎暮らしの番組でニホンミツバチを飼育する様子が放送された

### ニホンミツバチの入手

分蜂群れの捕獲が一般的な群れの入手方法です。

ニホンミツバチは山間部だけでなく、平野部や都市部にも生息しています。空の巣箱を置いておくと、そこにニホンミツバチが巣を作ることがります。

他にも、分蜂直後に、元の巣の近くに集合した際に、強制的に巣箱に入れて飼育することもできます。

群れの購入は一般的ではありません。ニホンミツバチの群れの繁殖・販売を行う業者がほとんど存在しないことも理由の1つです。購入する場合、５万円前後の価格となります。

### 巣箱

ニホンミツバチの飼育には、重箱式巣箱が広く使われています。

日本でも、巣枠式巣箱はセイヨウミツバチの飼育に広く用いられていますが、ニホンミツバチの飼育にはほとんど使われていません。

重箱式巣箱には、特に趣味での飼育に多くの長所があります。

- 巣箱製作に費用がかからない
- 飼育に手間がかからない
- スキルやノウハウがほとんど必要ない

### Structure of a pile box hive

The structure is simply a box with a small entrance. Like log hives, bees are allowed to build comb as they want.

A pile box hive consists of 2 to 6 boxes. Just 2 boxes are needed to act as a bait hive. As the colony grows, unlike a Langstroth hive where boxes are added to the top, additional boxes need to be added to the bottom.

### Extracting honey

Although a pile box hive does not have any frames, extracting honey is an improvement compared to a log hive. 

A pile box hive allows us to remove only the top box for extraction after the beees have filled it with honey. Unlike a log hive, the colony does not need to be destroyed during extraction.

### Box dimensions and how to make it

The box is a very simple structure. Japanese beeswax is softer than Western beeswax. The comb sometimes requires support to prevent it from falling. Two wires are crossed and attached within the box to provide this support.

### Structure of the top box

The top box has a duckboard and a lid. The following image is a cross-section of the top box. A duckboard is attached to make extracting honey easier.

### Structure of the entrance

The entrance frame is similar to the box. It is set on top of a board.

The entrance is important to protect the bees from giant hornets. Giant hornets are capable of destroying an entire bee colony. The hornets take honey and bee larvae to feed their own larvae.

### Advantages of a pile box hive

There are many advantages, especially for hobbyists.

- Low cost to construct the hive
- Less time and effort neeeded to manage the bees
- Few skills and know-how are needed

A pile box hive is so low maintenance that it can be left unchecked for months.

### Disadvantages of a pile box hive

There are some limitations to a pile box hive that restrict how you can manage a colony.

The basic idea is the same as a log hive. This hive provides an enclosed space for wild bees.

Honey extraction is much easier than a log hive, but some limitations are almost same.

You cannot do the following things:

- control swarming
- split the colony
- combine colonies
- collect honey from a single flower source

Honey production is lower because honeycombs are also removed during honey extraction.

### Comparison to the Langstroth hive

In Japan, the Langstroth hive is used widely to keep Western bees, but it is not often used to keep Japanese bees.

It is often said that the productivity of a Langstroth hive is higher. I am not sure it is true when keeping Japanese bees.

Actually, honey production per hive can be higher. However, in terms of time management, honey production per hour is more important.

A pile box hive can be more productive in terms of honey production per hour of labor because less time and effort are needed.

All I have to do when I use a pile box hive is: 

1. Make a beehive

2. Set a bait hive in the spring

3. Add boxes a few times throughout the year

4. Extract honey 

At a minimum, I need only 5 hours to extract 5kg of honey.

On the other hand, with a Langstroth beehive, it is expensive and takes longer if you make it yourself.

I need to inspect the colony almost every week and it takes a lot of time to go to the places where the hives are located.

How much more honey could I potentially get? As mentioned, I can get somewhere between 5kg - 10kg per hive on average when I use a pile box hive.

The increase in honey production may not be worth the time and effort required.

In addition to this, the Langstroth hive increases the risk of absconding.  For these reasons, the Langstroth hive is not used widely for Japanese bees.

### Comparison to the log hive

The log hive itself does not have any advantage over a pile box hive, but the method of honey extraction is disadvantageous. (However, it is sometimes said Japanese honey bees prefer a log hive because it mimicks their natural habitat, such as a hollow tree.)

The log hive and pile box hive share many of the same points:

- Inner structure (containing no frames)
- Cost and effort to make the hive
- Method of obtaining bees
- Inspection method
- Bee management

However, honey extraction is different.

The biggest problem with a log hive is that you need to destroy the colony and force out all of the bees out in order to extract honey.

The bees lose their larvae and honey in the fall, which means they cannot survive over the winter.

In that case, you need to capture swarms every spring, so it is not easy to increase the number of managed colonies.

Some beekeepers have some methods to avoid destroying the colony, but they are not easy to carry out and require more time and effort.

It is better to use a pile box hive if you do not want to destroy the colony.

### A pile box hive is suitable for hobbyists and a sideline beekeping

I understand that the Langstroth hive has many advantages over the pile box hive. I do not think that the pile box hive is always better than a Langstroth hive in all instances.

It depends on your preference and why you are keeping bees. A pile box hive is suitable for hobbyist because:

- It does not take much time and effort
- Low learning curve
- Initial cost is lower, under a few hundred US dollars or less

Typically hobbyists do not need to have a high honey production. Around 10kg is enough in many cases. You can extract enough honey for your family and friends without it taking a lot of time and money.

You still have time to enjoy other hobbies like a kitchen garden, even if you are working full-time.

A pile box hive is suitable for sideline beekeeping as well.

You can find many places to keep your hive if you live in a rural area. It's ok if it's not located near your home since you do not have to manage your hives often.

The honey produced by Japanese bees is more expensive than that of Western bees, costing about 100 US dollars per kg.

If you have 20 hives and extract 100kg of honey,  the revenue can be up to  10,000 US dollars.

### 重箱式巣箱の形状

重箱式巣箱の構造は、シンプルな形状の箱に、小さな入り口がついたものです。丸太をくり抜いた丸洞式巣箱の様に、ミツバチは自由に巣を作ります。次の動画は、巣箱に住みついて2週間後のニホンミツバチの様子です。

重箱式巣箱は、2から6段まで積み重ねます。分蜂を捕まえる段階では、2段あれば十分です。巣が大きくなるにつれて、箱を追加します。

### ハチミツの採取

重箱式巣箱には巣枠がありませんが、そのハチミツの採取方法は、丸洞式巣箱から改良されています。

最上段がハチミツでいっぱいになったときに、最上段を採ります。ハチミツの貯蔵部分の一部を失いますが、育児をする場所は破壊されないため、ニホンミツバチはその後も生活し続けることができます。

### 巣箱の寸法と作り方

重箱は、とてもシンプルな形状です。2本のワイヤーは、巣が落下しない様にするための、巣落ち防止棒と呼ばれるものです。

### 最上段の構造

最上段の重箱には、スノコ（内側のフタ）と、フタがついています。スノコは、ハチミツの採取をスムーズに行うために取り付けられます。

### 巣門の構造

巣門は、重箱の構造と似ています。底板の上に置いた時に、巣門ができるようになっています。

巣門はオオスズメバチからニホンミツバチを守るために大変重要です。オオスズメバチはニホンミツバチの巣を襲い、幼虫やサナギ、ハチミツなど全てを奪う天敵です。

### 重箱式巣箱の長所

重箱式巣箱には、特に趣味での飼育に多くの長所があります。

- 巣箱製作に費用がかからない
- 飼育に手間がかからない
- スキルやノウハウがほとんど必要ない

野生のニホンミツバチが中で住み着いている状態なので、何ヶ月も巣箱を放置することもできます。

### 重箱式巣箱の短所

重箱式巣箱は群れを管理するという点では、制限が多い巣箱です。基本的な考え、飼育方法は、丸太をくり抜いて作る丸洞式巣箱と変わりません。野生のニホンミツバチに、巣を作る場所を提供するというものです。

重箱式巣箱はハチミツ採取の点では大きく改善されていますが、他の点では丸洞式巣箱と同じ様な制限があります。

重箱式巣箱では次の様なことはできません。

- 分蜂のコントロール
- 群れの分割
- 群れの合同
- 単花蜜の採取

また、巣枠式巣箱と違い、ハチミツを採る際に巣も一緒に採るため、ハチミツの採蜜量もやや劣ると考えられます。

### 巣枠式巣箱との比較

日本でも、巣枠式巣箱はセイヨウミツバチの飼育に広く用いられていますが、ニホンミツバチの飼育にはほとんど使われていません。

巣枠式巣箱はハチミツの生産性が高いと言われます。ただ、ニホンミツバチを飼育する上で、必ずしもそうとは限りません。

確かに、1つの巣箱から採れるハチミツの量は多くなるでしょう。ただ、巣箱あたりの生産性よりも、時間あたりの生産性がより重要です。

重箱式巣箱では、ハチミツの量は少なくなる可能性がありますが、作業時間と労力も少ないです。

重箱式巣箱で飼育する場合、必要になるのは次のものです。

1. 巣箱を作る

2. 春に巣箱を設置し、ニホンミツバチの入居を待つ

3. 数回、巣箱を追加する

4. ハチミツを採る

少ない場合、年間に5時間程度費やせば、５キログラムのハチミツが採れます。

一方で、巣枠式巣箱で飼育する場合は、巣箱を購入費用がかかりますし、作るとしても重箱式巣箱よりも複雑な形状のため時間がかかります。

巣箱の内検を定期的に行う必要があり、自宅以外に巣箱を設置した場合には大きな負担となります。

このように時間や費用をかけて、重箱式巣箱よりどのくらいハチミツが採れるのでしょうか？　ニホンミツバチでは、1群から5キロから10キロ程度と、セイヨウミツバチと比べると5分の1から10分の1しかハチミツが採れません。

巣枠式巣箱を利用した場合のハチミツの採量の増加が、かけた時間や労力に見合うかはわかりません。

### 丸洞式巣箱との比較

丸洞式巣箱と重箱式巣箱は、野生のニホンミツバチに住処を提供する、自然な飼育方法という点で似ています。ただ、丸洞式巣箱が重箱式巣箱よりも優れている部分は少なく、多くの人が重箱式巣箱を選択しています。（丸洞式巣箱は木の空洞に似ているため、ニホンミツバチがより好むという意見もあります）。

丸洞式巣箱と、重箱式巣箱に共通する点は次の様なものがあります。

- 巣箱内部の構造（巣枠がない単純な空間）
- 巣箱製作コストの低さ
- 群れの入手方法
- 内検の方法
- 群れの管理方法

大きな違いが、ハチミツ採取の方法です。

丸洞式巣箱では、ハチミツを採取するため、ミツバチを追い出し、巣を破壊する必要があります。

ミツバチは追い出され、幼虫やハチミツを秋に失います。これは、その後の厳しい冬に死が待っていることを意味します。

養蜂家も、毎年春に新しく群れを捕獲する必要があり、群れを増やすのは簡単ではありません。

重箱式巣箱の様に、ハチミツをためている部分以外は巣を壊さずに採蜜を行う養蜂家もいるそうですが、それには技術が必要です。

### 重箱式巣箱は趣味と副業に向いた巣箱

巣枠式巣箱は近代的な巣箱であり、重箱式巣箱よりも多くの優れた点があることは間違いありません。ただ、状況や養蜂の目的によっては、必ず巣枠式巣箱が一番とは言えません。

重箱式巣箱は、次の点で趣味の養蜂に向いています

- 時間や手間がかからない
- 習得が必要な技術が少なく、学習に時間がかからない
- 初期費用が数万円以下

趣味での飼育の場合、10キログラムのハチミツが採れれば十分です。家族で食べたり、友達にあげて楽しむことができます。

ニホンミツバチの飼育には時間もかからないので、サラリーマンであったとしても家庭菜園や他の趣味を楽しむ時間もあります。

重箱式巣箱は副業にも適しています。田舎に住んでいれば、飼育場所に困ることはありません。重箱式巣箱はほとんど手間も掛からないので、自宅から少し離れた場所でも問題ありません。

ニホンミツバチのハチミツはセイヨウミツバチのハチミツよりも高価です。1キログラムが１万円ほどで売られています。

２０群れ飼育して、１００キログラムのハチミツが採取できれば、副業としては十分ではないでしょうか。しかも、時間もそれほどかけずに楽しむことができます。

重箱式巣箱はとてもシンプルな巣箱であり、野生にニホンミツバチが暮らすように生活します。採蜜や最低限の管理が行いやすいように工夫されています。

### Three ways to start keeping Japanese bees

There are three ways to get bees:

- Capturing a swarm
- Buying a colony 
- Transferring a wild colony into a hive

Capturing a swarm is the most common way to start keeping Japanese bees.

Wild bees live not only in rural areas but also in cities. Beekeepers set bait hives and wait for the swarms. 

Buying Japanese bees is not common because only a few commercial beekeepers sell Japanese honey bees.

It is pretty expensive, ranging from 300 - 700 US Dollars. Hobby beekeepers prefer to keep costs low.

It is also possible to transfer a wild colony into a hive, but it can be quite challenging for beginners.

### Attracting a swarm

It can be challenging to get a swarm to enter your hive. Cymbidium floribundum is used to increase the possibility.

The flower of the oriental orchid Cymbidium floribundum is known to attract the Japanese honeybee Apis cerana japonica. This effect is observed not only in workers but also in drones and queens. It attracts even swarming and absconding bees.

Now, it is widely known to attract Japanese bees. Most beekeepers use this flower and place it next to their bait hive.

### How does Cymbidium floribundum attract Japanese bees?

Some researchers found that there are chemical components which attract Japanese bee.

Oriental orchid (Cymbidium floribundum) attracts the Japanese honeybee (Apis cerana japonica) with a mixture of 3-hydroxyoctanoic acid and 10-hydroxy- (E)-2-decenoic acid.

Based on these chemicals, some researchers created a substitute product called  "Machibako-Lure".

Machibako-Lure is widely used now because it is easier to use. You can buy it, open it, and then attach it to your hive. It attracts Japanese bees for up to 45 days.

If you choose to use a Machibako-Lure you do not have to grow Cymbidium floribundum.

### 90% of swarms are attracted by Cymbidium floribundum or its substitute on "Swarm map".

I developed "<outerlink url="https://www.swarm-map.com/" title="Swarm map" />", a swarm reporting web system on the web. 

It allows beekeepers to report swarms, and all the reports are shown on the map.

Over 3,000 swarm reports are collected every year.

Beekeepers write what they used to attract swarm when they submit a report.

Cymbidium floribundum or its substitute Machibako-lure is used in around 90% of swarm reports in 2018.

・Machibako-Lure 45%

・Cymbidium floribundum 45%

・Neither 10 %

Machibako-lure launched in the spring of 2013, and it has become popular.

Over 5,000 beekeepers used the product in 2018.　This product is a great help for beginners because getting bees is most difficult to start beekeeping of Japanese bees.

Skilled beekeepers also use this to increase colonies efficiently.

### Transferring wild colonies into a hive

There is another method for capturing bees.

Japanese honeybees build combs in a tree, grave, house, etc. Several colonies are exterminated.

However, instead of exterminating a colony, it can be transferred into a hive.

I use a small Langstroth hive to keep the distance between each comb adequately. 

Otherwise, there is a risk of the colony absconding.

### 群れを入手する3つの方法

ニホンミツバチの群れを入手する方法としては、次の3つがあります。

- 分蜂群れを誘引・捕獲する
- 群れを購入する
- 野生の巣を巣箱に移す

野生のニホンミツバチの分蜂群れを巣箱に誘引するのが一般的です。野生のニホンミツバチは、自然豊かな山間部だけでなく、平野部や都市部にも生息しています。空の巣箱を設置しておくと、そこにニホンミツバチがやってきて入居することがあります。

群れの購入は一般的ではありません。ニホンミツバチの群れの繁殖・販売を行う業者がほとんど存在しないことも理由の1つです。購入する場合、５万円前後の価格となります。

お墓や、民家の床下などにできた野生の巣を巣箱に移すこともできますが、熟練者でないと難しいです。

### 分蜂群れの誘引

分蜂群れを誘引し、巣箱に住み着かせることはそう簡単ではありません。このため、キンリョウヘンという蘭が誘引に利用されます。

キンリョウヘンの花がニホンミツバチを誘引することが知られています。働き蜂だけでなく、雄蜂や女王蜂もキンリョウヘンに誘引されます。

分蜂した群れや、元の巣から引越しする群れの誘引に利用することができます。

キンリョウヘンの花に含まれる２つの物質がニホンミツバチを誘引することが発見され、論文が出ています。

その研究結果に基づき、キンリョウヘンの誘引成分を化学的に合成した待ち箱ルアーという製品が開発され、広く利用されています。

待ち箱ルアーは芳香剤のように、開封して巣箱に取り付けるだけで利用ができる製品です。

キンリョウヘンの花を育てるか、待ち箱ルアーを購入してニホンミツバチを誘引することができます。

### 90%の捕獲にキンリョウヘンか代替製品が利用されている

"<outerlink url="https://www.swarm-map.com/" title="分蜂マップ" />"というサイトには、日本中からニホンミツバチの捕獲報告が寄せられます。

報告には、どのように捕獲したかを記載します。９０％の報告に、キンリョウヘンか、その代替製品の待ち箱ルアーが使われています。

・キンリョウヘンを利用 45%

・待ち箱ルアーを利用 45%

・どちらも利用せず 10 %

キンリョウヘンと、待ち箱ルアーが広く普及していることが分かります。

### 野生の巣を巣箱に移す方法

群れの入手方法として、野生の巣を巣箱に移して飼育する方法もあります。ニホンミツバチは、木の中やお墓、民家の床下などに巣を作ります。

蜂駆除業者に駆除されることも多い一方、このような群れを巣箱に移して飼育することもできます。巣箱に移す際に、ハチミツが10kgほど採れることもあります。

ニホンミツバチの養蜂を始める場合、群れを捕獲して始めるのが一般的です。分蜂を誘引して巣箱に入るのを待ちます。購入することは稀です。

群れの捕獲

The pile box hive was designed to maximize time and effort with minimal management.

Japanese bees are native bees to Japan. They are resistant to infectious diseases and mites.

They can defend themselves against the Japanese hornet, and they can live in cold climates.

Little management is required other than adding boxes as the colony grows.

### Adding boxes as the colony grow

Additional boxes need to be added as the colony expands.

This must be done before the comb reaches the bottom of the hive.

Additional boxes need to be added to the bottom because Japanese honey bees build their comb from the top down.

I was a little bit late. The comb had reached the bottom. I should have done this a few weeks earlier. Fortunately, this did not cause any problems in this case.

### Inspection 

A pile box hive does not have frames, so inspections are limited.

It is almost the same as a log hive or skep hive. There are two ways of inspecting.

Firstly, you can look inside from the bottom. Secondly, you can observe the bees at the entrance of the hive. 

### First Inspection: Looking inside from the bottom

You can take a look inside the hive from the bottom. This is two weeks old colony of Japanese honeybees.

Mainly, I check the following things.

- Colony size
- Determining if the number of bees is sufficient

The next video shows an inspection of a healthy colony. There are many bees, and the combs are covered by bees.

On the other hand, the colony in the next video has fewer bees. It does not have a queen bee, so this colony is dying. It is not common to combine a queenless colony with another colony.

### Second Inspection: Observing the entrance

I check for the following things:

- Whether bees bring pollen
- The number of bees coming and going
- The number of drones

### How often should I inspect my bees? 

Once a month is sufficient. It is not easy to identify problems in the early stages.

For example, I cannot check if eggs have been laid in the combs in order to know if the queen is healthy.

I can determine that the hive is queenless after the number of bees decreases and many drones appear, but sometimes at this point, it is too late to remedy the problem.

In addition to this, it is difficult to combine colonies. Sometimes you cannot save colonies despite all your effort, even if you inspect your bees often.

### Swarm management

It is easy to split colonies kept in a Langstroth hive to increase the number of colonies.

However, it is impossible to do this with a pile box hive, so beekeepers focus on capturing swarms.

It is common to allow bees to swarm as they want, because it is difficult to kill new queens when they are larvae.

Beekeepers set bait hives within 300 meters from a hive that is swarming. They also collect swarms when they find them clustered on a tree or elsewhere.

Swarms tend to cluster within 10 meters from the first hive. Many beekeepers attach a board to a tree in order to attract swarms.

### I let some swarms go, but it is ok

Most swarms can be captured or enter bait hives on their own if there are many bait hives and you are keeping an eye on your bees.

It is impossible to capture all swarms, and some leave and nest in the wild. 

Its descendants may come back to your bait hive in the future.

There is a limited number of colonies in one area due to the quantity of nectar and pollen sources.

Beekeepers have to be mindful of nectar sources and the number of colonies they are keeping. 

Many experienced beekeepers can determine whether or not they have sufficient nectar sources. 

If they feel that there are insufficient nectar sources for the number of colonies they capture, they will sometimes give friends some swarms.

### 30% of loss is acceptable

It seems that only 25% of colonies can survive for over a year in the wild.

This is due to: 

- A colony swarms a few times or more in the spring 
- The number of colonies temporarily increases up to 4 times 
- However, it does not actually increase. It is constant in the long term.

On the other side, roughly 70 % of my colonies (kept in a pile box hive) survive over one year with minimal care.

The reasons that the survival rate is much higher are due to:

- Hive durability
- Hive design prevents giant hornet from invading
- An electric fence is used to prevent bears from destroying the hive
- Number of hives are placed taking into consideration nectar sources 
- When needed, sugar water is fed to weak colonies 

30% of colonies are lost, but this is considered an acceptable number. I can increase the number of colonies by capturing swarms every spring.

I may save 10 to 20% of colonies if I inspect and manage the bees more. However, it takes a lot of additional time and effort.

### Observation hive

I have some observation hive because it is hard to inspect the pile box hive. 

I have transferred a colony in a pile box hive to the ceiling of a shed.

Bees management

重箱式巣箱は、労力や時間がかからない巣箱です。

ニホンミツバチは野生のミツバチで、病害虫に耐性を持っています。天敵のオオスズメバチにも対抗策を持ち、日本の寒い冬にも適応しています。

巣の成長に合わせて重箱を追加する以外に、必要な世話は多くありません。

### 巣の成長に合わせた重箱の追加

ニホンミツバチの巣は上から下へ伸びていくため、巣の成長に合わせて一番下に重箱を追加します。次の動画では、巣箱の追加方法を紹介しています。

この動画では巣がはみ出ていますが、これは予想以上に巣の成長が早かったためです。持ち上げ機を使っていたおかげで無事に継ぎ箱することができました。

### 内検

重箱式巣箱では巣枠がないため、内検は限られています。内検の方法は丸洞式巣箱と大きくは変わりません。次の2つの方法があります。

1つ目は、巣箱を底から覗いて、巣を直接見ることです。2つ目は、巣から出入りするミツバチを観察することです。

### 巣箱の底から巣を直接見る方法

次の動画は、巣箱に入って2週間が経ったニホンミツバチの巣の様子です。巣箱の下の板が引き出せるようになっており、下から直接巣を見ることができます。

この方法では、次の様な内容を確認します。

- 巣の大きさ
- ミツバチの数が十分に多いか

次の動画は健康な群れの様子で、多数のミツバチがおり、巣も成長しています。

### 巣門から出入りするミツバチの観察

次の様な項目を確認します

- ミツバチが花粉を運んでいるか
- 出入りするミツバチの数
- 雄蜂の数

内検は月に１回で十分です。重箱式巣箱ではニホンミツバチ任せ、自然任せであるので、内検して問題を発見したからといってできることも多くありません。

例えば、巣枠式巣箱では、女王蜂の産卵の状況を確認しますが、重箱式巣箱では巣板を見ることができません。

### 分蜂の管理

重箱式巣箱では、群れの分割を人工的に行うことは困難です。

また、王台を潰して分蜂を防ぐことも難しいので、自由に分蜂させるのが一般的です。元の群れから数百メートル以内に分蜂群れが飛んでいくことが多いため、その範囲に待ち箱を設置してニホンミツバチの入居を待ちます。

また、分蜂すると元の巣箱のすぐ近くにいったん集合するので、集合した状態の分蜂を強制的に巣箱に入れてしまいます。

### 分蜂して自然に戻る群れもいるが、大きな問題ではない

健康なニホンミツバチの群れであれば、春に３、４回は分蜂します。

分蜂が起こりそうな日に巣箱に目を光らせ、分蜂して出てきたところを捕獲したり、周りにたくさんの待ち箱を設置しておけば、ほとんどの分蜂を捕獲できます。

すべての分蜂群れの捕獲は難しく、飼育群れから分蜂が飛んでいき、野生に巣を作ることも多いですが、ニホンミツバチを自然のままに飼育するスタイル上、それほど大きな問題ではありません。

### 飼育群れの30%は死滅するが、”自然”なことである

野生の群れの場合、次のような理由から、翌年までに営巣を続けられる群れは4分の1程度であると考えられます。

- 1つの群れが、春に３回前後分蜂する
- 春先には、一時的に群れの数が4倍程度になる
- 長期的に見ると群れの数は一定

一方で、人間が重箱式巣箱で飼育する場合、7割程度は生き残ることができます。

野生に近い飼育方法でありながら、7割程度も生き残ることができるのは、次の理由からです。

- 巣箱がしっかりと丈夫なものである
- 巣箱は、オオスズメバチを防ぐ構造となっている
- 天敵のクマから守るため、電気柵で巣箱を保護する
- 群れが過密になった場合は、移動させて調整される
- 餌不足に陥った群れに、給餌する場合がある

反対に言えば、3割の群れは失われるのですが、これは十分に高い割合です。春に分蜂群れを捕獲することで、群れを増やしていくことができます。

### 観察用の開放巣

重箱式巣箱は観察ができないため、観察用に開放巣を作っています。

重箱式巣箱に作られた巣を、小屋の天井に取り付けて、そのまま巣を作らせています。

重箱式巣箱ではニホンミツバチの飼育の手間はほとんどかからないようになっています。野生の状態でニホンミツバチを飼育します。

ミツバチの管理

Although a pile box hive does not have any frames, the method for extracting honey is an improvement compared to a log hive. A pile box hive allows us to remove only the top box after it is full of honey. The colony is not destroyed to take honey.

### When to extract honey

You should wait for the hive to have four or more boxes. You should not take honey earlier because 

- the top box can contain larvae.
- the combs can drop after taking honey.

I do not recommend taking honey in summer because it is too hot in Japan and it makes combs softer.

Honeybees need time to build large combs, so fall is best to take honey. You should wait for about a half year after capturing Japanese bees in early spring. You need to be patient.

If about 5 kg of honey is left for the colony, it can survive over the winter. This is the most important point and this makes it easier to increase the number of colonies. 

### Honey extraction method

One box filled with honey contains about 5 kg of honey. You can take 5kg - 10kg (1 box or 2 boxes) of honey per colony on average.

The top box is removed to take honey. It takes only 10 - 20 minutes. Removal does not disturb the bees too much.

The colony loses about 20 % of comb but will continue to raise the larvae and collect honey. The bees rarely abscond after taking honey.

### Extracting honey from the box

Extracting honey is not difficult, and it does not take a lot of time and effort.

Expensive tools are not needed. You can use kitchen goods to squeeze the honey from the comb.

First, I cut each comb into three pieces. About 70 % of honey drips out in 12 hours.

I then compress the comb to extract the remaining honey.

I use a squeezer to increase time efficiency because I have many beehives to take honey. It is enough to squeeze with hands.

### Rendering beeswax

Beeswax can be rendered after squeezing honey. Its melting point is quite low,  about 65 degrees celsius. 

Melting it in a pot of hot water is the most common way.

Harvesting honey

重箱式巣箱の採蜜方法は、遠心分離機を使ったセイヨウミツバチの巣枠式巣箱のものとは大きく異なっています。しかし、ハチミツを採る際にニホンミツバチに与える影響が最小限となるように工夫されています。

### ハチミツ採取の時期

重箱式巣箱では、4段以上に巣が成長したときに、最上段を取り外してハチミツの採取を行います。次の理由からです。

- 最上段に幼虫が含まれる恐れがあるため
- 採蜜後に巣が自重で落下する恐れがあるため

夏にハチミツを取ることはあまりおすすめしません。大変暑く作業が困難なことと、暑さで巣が柔らかくなっており、落下の危険が高いからです。

春から巣が大きくなる時間も考えると、秋が最も良い季節です。春にニホンミツバチを捕獲してから、約半年も待つ必要があります。すぐにハチミツを採りたくなりますが、忍耐強さが必要です。

京都府のように平均的な気候の地域では、約5キロのハチミツを残しておけば、ニホンミツバチは越冬することができます。

### ハチミツの採取方法

巣箱の最上段を分離してハチミツを採ります。慣れれば10分から20分で作業を行うことができます。1つの箱に約5キロのハチミツが含まれています。

5段あるうちの1段を採った場合、ニホンミツバチは20％の巣を失いますが、育児を行う場所には影響がありません。採蜜の作業の直後から普段通りの生活を再開できます。

### 重箱からハチミツを取り出す

分離した最上段からハチミツを取り出します。高価な専用の道具は必要なく、キッチンにあるもの、ホームセンターで売られているものを利用します。

まず、巣に包丁で切れ目を入れて、ハチミツが落ちてくるのを待ちます。おおよそ70%のハチミツが一晩経つと落下します。

その後、残ったハチミツを採取するため、巣を圧搾します。

たくさんの採蜜を行うため、圧搾機を使っていますが、巣を押し潰すことができればなんでも良いです。次の動画のように、手で押し潰すことができます。

### 蜜蝋の作り方

ハチミツを搾った残りから、蜜蝋を作ることができます。蜜蝋の融点は65度と低いため、お湯の中で溶かす方法が一般的です。

他には蒸し器を使う方法もあり、このほうがより綺麗な蜜蝋が作れます。

ニホンミツバチのハチミツの採取方法をご紹介します。シンプルな方法ですが、スムーズにできるように工夫されています。詳しく紹介します。

ハチミツの採取

The Japanese giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia japonica) is terrible. It can completely destroy a bee colony. The honey and bee larvae are also taken to feed the hornet's larvae.

### Japanse honey bee's protective behaviors

Japanese honey bees can protect their colony against giant hornets. As a hornet enters the hive, a mob containing hundreds of honey bees surrounds the hornet, forming a ball, completely covering it and preventing it from reacting effectively. 

The bees violently vibrate their flight muscles in much the same way as they do to heat the hive during cold conditions. This raises the temperature in the ball to the critical temperature of 46 °C (115 °F).

In addition, the exertion of the honey bees raises the level of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the ball. At that concentration of CO2, the honey bees can tolerate up to 50 °C (122 °F), but the hornet cannot survive the combination of a temperature exceeding 46 °C (115 °F) and a high carbon dioxide level.

However, they cannot protect their colony when many giant hornets attack them at the same time. They will not fight giant hornets to the end and instead choose to abscond. It seems that giant hornets destroy many wild Japanese honey bee colonies. 

One day in September, giant hornets attacked my observation hive. The colony was invaded, and the bees absconded.

### How to save bees

I can effectively protect my bees from hornet attacks because my pile box hive is designed to prevent hornets from invading. 

The entrance is not high enough for giant hornets to invade. It is best if it is made of metal because giant hornets will chew the entrance in effort to expand it, so that they can gain access to the hive. However, after failing to expand the entrance, giant hornets eventually will give up after a few days.

Wild beehives are often attacked by giant hornets. In those cases, the entrances are wide enough for giant hornets to enter the colony.

So, a metal mesh is an effective way to save wild beehives.

### Glue trap for giant hornet

The giant hornet has a habit of attacking bees as a group. You can use this habit to capture giant hornets with a glue sheet trap easily.

First, capture a giant hornet and put it on a glue sheet when giant hornets are attacking your bees. Then, put it near the beehive. The pheromone emitted by the captured hornet attracts other giant hornets, thus leading them to be entrapped on the glue sheet as well.

### Western honeybees

By the way, the giant hornet is much bigger problem for Western bees because they are not equipped to protect their colony from the hornet. 

An individual giant hornet can kill forty Western bees a minute while a group of 30 hornets can destroy an entire hive containing 30,000 bees in less than four hours. This is why Western bees cannot live in the wild in Japan.

As a result, the giant hornet protects the ecosystem and habitats of Japanese honeybees from the non-native Western honey bee.

The Japanese giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia japonica) is terrible. It can completely destroy a bee colony. 

Giant hornet

秋になると、スズメバチがニホンミツバチの巣のまわりにやってくることが多くなります。スズメバチは肉食ですので、働き蜂を捕まえて連れ去ったり、殺したり、巣の中に侵入して幼虫を連れ去ったりします。中でも、オオスズメバチはニホンミツバチの群れを壊滅させる、恐ろしい天敵です。

ニホンミツバチはオオスズメバチを倒すことができます。1匹のオオスズメバチが巣箱に侵入したときに、数百匹のニホンミツバチが取り囲み、蜂球を作ります。

ニホンミツバチは筋肉を震わせて発熱し、蜂球内部の温度を上昇させ、その温度は４６度にも達します。さらに、内部の二酸化炭素濃度が高くなることにより、オオスズメバチは死んでしまいます。

しかし、一度に多くのオオスズメバチが襲ってきたときはニホンミツバチもやられてしまいます。ニホンミツバチは最後まで戦うのではなく、勝負がついた段階で巣から全員で逃去して新しい場所で巣を作ります。ただ、オオスズメバチがやってくる秋になってから別の場所で巣を作っても、冬の間に食糧が尽きて群れが死滅する場合が多いと考えられます。

野生のニホンミツバチの群れの多くが、オオスズメバチにより壊滅させられていると考えられます。9月のある日、オオスズメバチが開放巣を襲い、ニホンミツバチは逃げ出してしまいました。

### ニホンミツバチの群れの守り方

ニホンミツバチをオオスズメバチから守る方法は、巣門を十分に小さくし、オオスズメバチが侵入できないようにすることです。

巣門は金属製にします。これは、オオスズメバチが巣門の周辺をかじって広げて侵入しようとするためです。金属の巣門を広げることはできず、オオスズメバチは数日で諦めてしまいます。

野生のニホンミツバチの多くは、巣門が広かったり、もろかったりするため、オオスズメバチにやられることが多くなります。

野生のニホンミツバチの巣を保護したい場合は、金網を貼るのが効果的です。

### 粘着シートトラップで襲来したオオスズメバチの捕獲

オオスズメバチは集団でミツバチや他のスズメバチを攻撃する習性があり、これを利用して粘着シートでオオスズメバチを捕獲できます。

まず、1匹のオオスズメバチを捕獲し、粘着シートトラップに取り付けます。それを巣箱の上などに置きます。すると、他のオオスズメバチが誘引されて次々と捕獲できます。

### セイヨウミツバチとオオスズメバチ

ところで、オオスズメバチはセイヨウミツバチにとってはかなり重大な影響があります。

セイヨウミツバチはオオスズメバチに対抗策を持たず、数十匹のオオスズメバチによって群れが壊滅させられてしまいます。

オオスズメバチがいるため、日本のほとんどの地域ではセイヨウミツバチが野生化していません。結果的に、オオスズメバチがニホンミツバチの生息域を守っているのです。

秋になると、スズメバチがニホンミツバチの巣のまわりにやってくることが多くなります。スズメバチは肉食ですので、働き蜂を捕まえて連れ去ったり、殺したり、巣の中に侵入して幼虫を連れ去ったりします。

Asian honey bees (Apis cerana) live in many Asian countries.

Keeping honey bees can be a way to earn money in rural areas of developing countries.

Asian bees are kept in a log hive as a side job or a hobby in Asian countries.

Switching from log hive to pile box hive can improve honey production.

### Switching from Log hive

The biggest problem with the log hive is that you need to destroy the colony and force out all bees to extract honey.

In that case, you need to capture swarms every spring, so it is not easy to increase colonies.

Except for harvesting honey, The ways of beekeeping of log hive and pile box hive are almost the same.

Switching to a pile box hive from a log hive can increase honey production and income without increasing cost and effort.

In fact, many hobby beekeepers have switched to a pile box hive from a log hive in Japan.

### Langstroth hive

In my opinion, the Langstroth hive is not best for a side business in rural areas because they are small farmers and busy growing many crops. 

They do not have time to learn how to use a Langstroth hive and manage bees with a Langstroth hive. (It needs more work to keep bees). 

There are many differences between the Log hive and the Langstroth hive. They need someone who teaches beekeeping with the Langstroth hive too. It is not easy to switch to the Langstroth hive.


Eastern bees are kept in a log hive as a side job or a hobby not only in Japan but also Asian countries.

ニホンミツバチはトウヨウミツバチの亜種です。トウヨウミツバチはアジアの広い地域に生息しています。

発展途上国の農村部では、自給自足に近い生活を行なっている住民も多いですが、養蜂はそのような住民の副収入源となる可能性があります。

そう言った地域では、丸太をくり抜いた巣箱や、伝統的な方法で飼育している場合が多いですが、重箱式巣箱に切り替えることでハチミツの生産量を増加させることができるかもしれません。

### 丸洞式巣箱からの移行

丸洞式巣箱の最大の問題は、巣を破壊しないとハチミツを採取できない点です。

丸洞式巣箱と重箱式巣箱は、採蜜方法以外の飼育方法には大きな違いがありません。重箱式巣箱は単純な構造ですので、木材が手に入るところであれば簡単に製作できます。

丸洞式巣箱から重箱式巣箱に切り替えることで、ハチミツの生産性を高められる可能性があります。

実際に、日本では丸洞式巣箱から重箱式巣箱に切り替えた人が多くいます。

### 巣枠式巣箱

巣枠式巣箱は素晴らしい巣箱ですが、農村部で副収入目的の場合、巣枠式巣箱が常に最適とは限りません。

自給自足的な生活を送る人々は、様々な農作物の栽培を行なっており、十分な時間もない場合があります。

巣枠式巣箱の飼育方法を学ぶ時間も必要ですし、巣枠式巣箱は丸洞式巣箱や重箱式巣箱よりも飼育に時間がかかります。

丸洞式巣箱と巣枠式巣箱では飼育方法も大きく変わります。巣枠式巣箱を使った飼育方法を教えてくれる人が身近にいないと難しいと考えられます。

養蜂を通じて、途上国の農村で暮らす人を支援することが可能です。アジアでは原始的な巣箱で飼育している例が多く、重箱式巣箱が良い用途になります。

### Pile box hive for Western bees

Only a few beekeepers keep Western bees in Pile box hive in Japan, mainly when its swarm comes into the hive accidentally. I am not sure if it is going well.

It is hard to treat diseases when a pile box hive is used, it is a huge problem.

I guess you can use Pile box hive when

- You are keeping Western bee in Skep hive or Log hive
- There are wild colonies, and they are living by themselves.

I am not sure Pile box hive works in your countries. It depends on the behavior and characteristics of your bees, your style, and your purpose of beekeeping. However, I have found some beekeepers who use pile box hive (many of them call it "Japanese hive"), let me introduce.

### 重箱式巣箱でセイヨウミツバチを飼育

日本では、たまたまセイヨウミツバチが意図せずに入ってしまった場合、重箱式巣箱で飼育することがあります。重箱式巣箱でセイヨウミツバチをうまく飼育できるかはわかりません。

重箱式巣箱ではセイヨウミツバチで必要なダニの対策が行いにくいので、大きな問題となります。

例えば以下のような場合、セイヨウミツバチを重箱式巣箱で飼育できると考えられます。

- すでに丸洞などでセイヨウミツバチを飼育しており、問題なく飼育できている場合
- セイヨウミツバチが野生に生息している環境である場合

重箱式巣箱を他の国でセイヨウミツバチの養蜂に使えるかは分かりません。飼育するミツバチの特性や、飼育の目的によっても変わってきます。

ただ、これまでに重箱式巣箱を海外で試している動画を見たことがあるので、いくつか紹介します。重箱式巣箱は、「日本式巣箱（Japanese hive)」と呼ばれることも多いです。

About us

The Japanese honey bee is one of the subspecies of Apis cerana. Other subspecies can be found in Korea, Taiwan, China, Thailand and several other asian countries.

### How do you treat for varroa mite?

The Japanese honey bee is resistant to the varroa mite. Varroa mites originally only occurred in Asia, on the Asian honey bee. 

### Can you export queens?

Unfortunately I cannot export queens to other countries. Unlike Western honey bees, it is challenging to rear queen bees of Japanese honey bees. Therefore, queen bees of Japanese honey bees are not commercially reared or sold in Japan. 

This hive has a very simple structure. It does not contain any removable frames.  The structure is simply a box with a small entrance.  Like log hives, bees are allowed to freely build comb unrestricted by frames.

Hornets are the most common predator of Japanese honeybees. Attacks by Japanese giant hornets (Vespa mandarinia), the world's largest hornets, and Japanese yellow hornets (Vespa simillima xanthoptera) are relatively common in late summer and fall. 

Japan has two honey bees, the native Apis cerana japonica (Japanese honey bee) and the imported Apis mellifera (Western honey bee). In 1877 (1), the Western bee was imported along with Langstroth hive to Japan. Due to its higher honey production (2), commercial beekeepers started keeping only Western bees after that. On the other hand, more and more people have started keeping Japanese bees as a hobby (3), using a simple hive called a pile box hive.
